About the Collection

In Spring of 2000, the LTV Steel Corporation graciously donated a large collection of slides, negatives, and photos of steel plants from LTV and predecessor companies, such as Republic Steel, Jones and Laughlin, Otis Steel, and Corrigan McKinney Steel Company.

The bulk of the collection comes from Republic Steel, and consists of tens of thousands of negatives and slides from their photographic department. Nearly all aspects of steel production are covered, from shipping the raw materials in, to iron production in the blast furnace, steelmaking in the Open Hearth and Basic Oxygen furnaces, and the shaping of steel in the hot and cold rolling mills. There are also hundreds of photos from Otis Steel in the 1930s, showing various work crews and facilities.

The images on these web pages are only a small sample of this massive collection, which when processed by the WRHS library, will be open to researchers.
